Have you ever been reading a book or sitting in English class when you come across a word that you don’t know? Personally, I’m a little OCD when it comes to my vocabulary, and am always trying to keep it as arrant as possible. 😀 That is why when I came across FreeRice, I was amazed and spent what literally amounted to hours on it. For those of you that aren’t English geeks like me, you can also try your hand at other subjects, like Math, Geography, Chemistry, and even other languages like German or Spanish!
What is FreeRice, you ask? Basically it is a non-profit website designed to assist in providing global education and helping alleviate world hunger through the UN. What the website does is operate on a page-by-page quiz format. For every question you get right, the page refreshes and loads a new question. When the page refreshes, a new advertisement loads, generating money for the website. The organization has simplified the math, and basically for each new advertisment, enough money is generated through Adsense to buy 10 grains of rice. In other words, do some trivia, and for every question you answer correctly, you donate 10 grains of rice. You may not think that 10 grains is a lot, but I’ll be honest – the website is addicting. 😛 Over an hour and a half, I accumulated 7,480 grains of rice, which is about a quarter of a kilogram of rice. This was just from one kid being bored, so I can only imagine what the possibilities would be if several people did it. I strongly recommend that you check it out at freerice.com!
You, Syed, are awesome! Thank you 🙂
Thanks! And you are very welcome! =)
