Food Truck Review: The Happy Truck

So the name, The Happy Truck, is kinda clever. They call it the H.appy Truck because it serves Appies (appetizers) to satisfy your Appy-tite. I love word play. But I love food more.

The H.appy Truck

First of all, I have to say that the Happy Truck, made me… not so happy. Like table-flipping unhappy. Tracking it down was something like Mission Impossible. Despite the Facebook, Twitter and Eat Street updates, I needed advanced notice because of my full-time job. I sent emails and had my family members calling the truck and leaving a message, all of which went unanswered. I decided to email them for a location to meet at, which happened to be the Shaw campus, but because of the electrical fire, the Happy Truck cancelled and we weren’t notified. It was a wild goose chase to say the least, which dragged on for weeks. But now, onto the food. You can’t stay angry at good food.

The great thing about the Happy Truck is that it has a diverse menu. They serve mainly to please customers, so they have flavors from Mexican to Indonesian. Their menu is ever-changing which is a new twist to the many set-menu trucks. The day that I found them, they had grilled up their famous Happy Plate, Colombian Hot Dog, Beef on a Bun and Spicy Smokies. We got the Spicy Smokies and the Happy Plate, and it didn’t disappoint.

The menu I took a picture of that doesn't match my order. I get effort points at least.

Note: Being me, I forgot to take pictures of the truck, so went back to find them another day. Since the menus change constantly, what I ordered doesn’t match the menu, so just smile and nod and look at the pretty food.

Spicy Smokey

Spicy Smokey and Fries

I wouldn’t say that the smokies and fries were particularly original, but the taste was definitely something my stomach liked. The fries were soft and warm, and seasoned perfectly with the right amount of flavor. I passed the smokey around to get an opinion on the taste (because sharing is caring), and my brother reckoned that it was too spicy for his tastes, but I enjoyed having it fresh off the grill. Spicy adds that zing that most hot dogs don’t usually have. Simple, tasty, and quick.

The Happy Plate

Zee Happy Plate

This mountain of deliciousness has coconut rice, spring rolls, coleslaw, satay curry beef skewers, and minced beef in satay sauce. For those of you that don’t know what satay is, it’s marinated grilled meat on skewers, served with sauce. This dish filled me up. In fact, I couldn’t finish it and my family was more than happy to help me clean my plate off. I couldn’t decide which portion of the meal to eat first, so I mixed it all together. The coconut rice complimented the peanut satay sauce from the beef. The skewered beef was grilled to perfection and the coleslaw just offered a different flavor to all the satay sauce there. The crunchy spring rolls were a nice contrast of texture, but honestly, who cares when it all tastes so good. I recommend this dish, and I’m pretty sure the rest of my family would say the same.

Happy eating, folks ;D
