The Calgary International Film Festival is known for its broad display of up-and-coming international filmmaking talent. However, not all of the talent displayed at the festival each year is from the artsy adults that are often associated with the event. This year I got to see first-hand the spectacular work of the world’s filmmaking under-18s in the Youth by Youth Cinema Competition.
Youth from all over submitted their short films in the competition, either under the category of elementary or junior high/high school. The range of films was intriguing and expansive; from spunky cartoons to mini psychological thrillers, there was something for everyone in every genre. You wouldn’t believe that they were all written and produced by a bunch of kids.
The Youth by Youth Cinema showing seemed underrated to me, despite the awe-inspiring talent that I witnessed. I suppose that most festival-goers overlook the youth section in their quest to see the more “polished” adult-produced films. While this is understandable, I think the youth films were both impressive and professional. They also represent a sort of hope for the next generation; these young filmmakers ensure that art is not undervalued and the purpose of life is not ignored.
I’m looking forward to next year’s festival, where I hope to check out the new youth talent and see the return of a few favourites, and I sincerely hope that you’ll give Youth by Youth Cinema a chance as well.
