Creative Writing Prompts

I used to make up a ton of short stories when I was younger, but over time I stopped writing them. Probably because I don’t have that much free time anymore, but also because I feel like I’ve lost some of my creativity. I’ve been writing a lot, but mostly essays, book reports, and so on. Through all this, plus the high amounts of stress students like me endure, I haven’t felt any inspiration to write creatively. Luckily, I’ve come across some TikTok accounts that give some very fun writing prompts. Below I’ve listed some of my favorite ones, and I hope you find at least one that sparks your imagination. Most importantly, when writing these, have fun and let those creative juices flow!

  • You lost your sight – along with everyone else on earth – in the great blinding. Two years later, without warning, your sight returns. As you look around, you realize that every available wall, floor and surface has been painted with the same message – “Don’t tell them you can see”.
  • While cleaning your attic, you find a box of glass balls with names on them. You accidentally drop one, and as soon as it shatters, a person appears.
  • Humans start out at birth with milk white blood. The more crimes they commit, the darker their blood becomes. One day, you meet your soulmate. Skip a few years, and things are amazing… until your soulmate trips, falls, and exposes black blood.
  • You volunteered to test the first time machine, for the test you are sent 24 hours into the future. When you emerge from the machine you discover the lab trashed and empty with “sorry” written on the wall with blood.

  • When people are born, they are assigned a soulmate. They have an original song in their head that only them and their soulmate know. A person just broke into your house and you’re pretty sure they’re there to murder you. They’re humming your song under their breath.
  • “Come on, aren’t you a little old to have an imaginary friend?” He was right, but it seemed so real. “I guess…” “So maybe make some real ones, ones who don’t have scaly skin and forked tongues.” I stopped in my tracks. “I never told you what it looks like.”
  • You die. As per your nerdy request, your tombstone is inscribed with GAME OVER, CONTINUE? With a little slot for coins. One day, someone puts in a coin and you suddenly burst out of your grave.
  • You are in a typical awkward elevator ride with a group of other people, suddenly a man says “So, I bet you’re wondering why I’ve gathered you here” before hitting the emergency stop button.
  • After years of gentle persuasion your best friend since childhood finally agrees to seek help for their serious mental problems. Much to your dismay, you slowly start to realize that you are their imaginary friend.

  • You have the ability to freeze time. When you do, everyone else freezes too. One day, you freeze time and are astounded to see a girl continuing her walk down the street. However, as soon as she sees you, she stands perfectly still and pretends to be frozen.
  • Every baby is taken away by the government and returned when they are ten years old. They never remember what happened in those years, but they always recognize their parents. You, however, remember everything, and those are not your parents.
  • A man who sees ghosts checks himself into a mental institution, oblivious to the fact that the facility has been closed for almost thirty years.
  • You just moved to a new neighborhood and you hear the music of an ice cream truck coming down the street. As you and your family walk outside you notice all your neighbors rushing inside and locking their doors and windows.
