Communet: Spread love, not hate

Communet is a popular app where you can write anonymous messages about people at your school. It’s a great way to send messages of downloadencouragement to other students or to compliment someone you are too shy to talk to in person; however, it is also an easy way to post mean messages about others. So how do we stop the hate? Certain schools have taken matters into their own hands by monitoring what is said in the school’s forum. The only problem with this is that there is no way to remove the messages and they cannot tell who is writing them. The administration can try to track them down by doing some investigating in the school, but can not virtually track them down without getting the police involved. Although Cyber Bullying is frowned upon, it is only illegal if the person being attacked is being threatened or feels unsafe. Getting the school involved is great on a bigger scale, but what about all the smaller comments that can’t be tracked down by the police? The easiest way to stop  the hate from coming in is to encourage other’s to be kind to one another. Although you can’t eliminate all of the hate, you can at least drown it out  by flooding the app with positive messages aimed towards a specific person or the entire school in general. When a persons sees someone take a stand to fight cyber bullying, it encourages them to do the same.

I think Communet is a great idea for an app, with just a few, simple modifications like the report button; the app could be amazing. I’ve seen messages like “hope everyone had a day that’s just as awesome and they are,” and “Shout out to all the beautiful, lovely, talented people who make Bishop Carroll the best high school in Calgary.” These kinds of messages can really put a smile on your face and motivate you to do your best. But when the app is being used for the wrong reasons, the feelings can quickly turn south. All it takes is one rude and negative comment to ruin someone’s mood or maybe even day, so give some love to your fellow students!
