Calgary youth photography contest

I’ve noticed that there are some really awesome photographers here in Calgary. Some of the photos I see as profile pictures on Facebook or outside the art classes at my school look like they came straight out of a magazine. That’s why I’m letting all you great photographers know about this amazing contest.

Calgary Junior High and Senior High Students are invited to showcase their photographic talent at the upcoming 2012 Mayor’s Environment Expo.

If your photo is chosen as the winner, it will be enlarged and displayed at a reception held on May 22 in Calgary. EVERY photo entered into the contest will be on display. Additionally, the winners gets to keep an enlarged AND framed copy of their amazing photo for themselves to display wherever they choose.

The focus for this year’s photo contest asks contestants to consider the environmental community which surrounds them and how action can be taken in order to protect it.

Here are some specific themes!

  • Before and After
  • Trash to Treasure
  • Breath
  • Patterns

There are some great prizes up for grabs including Flip digital camcorders and Crumpler bags!

In last year’s contest there were fifty photos submitted by Calgary students.  “The quality of the submissions was incredible,” said Lorraine McElwain, contest judge and Talisman Energy representative on the 2011 Expo organizing committee. “Clearly a lot of thought and creativity went into the choice of subject matter and there was a really high caliber of photographic skill.”

What are you waiting for? This is your chance to show off that awesome shot! It could have been completely accidental or simply taken without much thought on your way home from school. Whatever the background, as long as it fits into the theme, participate in the contest and you could be rewarded quite nicely.
