By now I’m pretty sure you know who that man is. He’s known as the “father of confederation”, after all. Wait, why are we bringing him up? No, I don’t mean to make youthareawesome.com seem like your Social Studies classroom if you really hate history. There’s a reason why we’re bringing up such an important figure—January 11th is officially Sir John A. Macdonald day.

Confederation is an integral part of Canadian heritage as we all know it. Sir John A. Macdonald was born on January 11th, 1815—198 years later, we are still celebrating his birthday to recognize his contributions. It’s known as a great opportunity for Youth leaders to educate younger students on the Canadian history, a day where activities are held across Canada in commemoration. In our city, there’s also a Junior High named after him which is right beside John G. Diefenbaker high school. Last year, the old Bank of Montreal building was renamed in his honor. On the lighter side, it’s also a Twitter trend; #SJAMDay and #SirJohnADay are hashtags you’ll likely see again in Tweets this time around.

If it wasn’t for his advocacy, we wouldn’t be able to identify ourselves as Canadians. Check out http://sirjohnaday.com/, a dedicated website on this awareness day, for more informationIt’s slightly out of date, but I wonder if there is a contest this year like the one shown on the webpage. Some of us might not be so patriotic; that doesn’t mean that Canadian living and culture hasn’t left us fond memories, however.
