This poem was inspired by the desire to just write something after quite a long break from poetry. The process of applying for university can be overwhelming with everyone trying to offer their advice, wanted or unwanted. It is important to have a way to sometimes break free and that’s what this poem is about. Hope you enjoy 🙂
I’m scared to fly high
Because maybe I’ll burn
Or my friends will stand and shoot me
When they find it’s their turn
Because I don’t want to fall
To be laughed at and called names
How could I stand tall?
I’m scared to fly high
What if I can’t get back down
All I want is stability
Two feet on the ground
I’m scared to fly high
What if it’s not enough?
What if I’m not that strong?
What if I’m not that tough?
Unless I do try
Unless I spread my wings
And leap to the sky
So maybe I’ll burn
But I’d be close to the sun
Living til last breath
Having some fun
So maybe they’ll shoot me
And shout “come back down!”
Or maybe, like my parents,
They’ll look and they’ll frown
It’s time to grow up
Put away that dream
But please mom and dad
You won’t believe what I’ve seen
But it matters to me
I’ve tasted adventure
Man, it’s good to be free.
Stay free, friends.
