Ok so… here’s a fun little thought for the day. Roughly last week I was at a family friends house and we decided to go to the park to play some baseball and soccer. I have seldom been to this park where we decided to play. We decided to start off by playing baseball. After about 20 minutes of playing three kids asked if they could jump in and play as well. I agreed and we ended up playing some more baseball for about 30 minutes. About halfway through, this teenager, whom I have never met before, asked me what my favourite sport was. I replied with soccer. He said “oh that’s cool” and we kept playing baseball. After about half and hour this teenager asked again, “Hey, there’s a soccer game going on on the other field, do you want to go play?” To which I replied yes. We walked over to the field and within 30 seconds of arriving I was put on a team and we started playing. We played for 30 minutes until I had to go home for dinner.
This is what I love about sports. They are more than just a game, they are a universal language. You can be from two different parts of the world, however still connect on something you both love and enjoy. Sports allow us to express who we are, meet new people, and make lasting friendships and memories. I know this might sound biased because I love sports. But I think the implication that you have to be good at sports to enjoy them is misconstrued. Simply giving it a shot, meeting new people will prove that it’s a worthwhile experience. So the next time you see a game of soccer or basketball happening in the park, ask if you can jump in. You never know if you have just met your newest friend.
