One of my biggest pet peeves is when people criticize someone else’s music taste. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion. Yes, it’s good to have your own identity and yes, I’m happy that you know yourself and you have some well founded confidence. Nevertheless, music is therapeutic. People turn to it in search of joy, solace, amity and/or just to feel something. It creates a portable place of comfort and I’m sure it’s safe to say that everybody, old, young, happy or sad, appreciates music. It’s okay to joke around when that one friend puts Ariana Grande on for the umpteenth time or when they put on gangster rap when you really want to feel like you’re wearing a pair of chaps and a cowboy hat, but my heart hurts a little when people instantly shut down someone’s song suggestion. That song could be what can turn their day around no matter what and you’re making them feel bad about it by putting it down??

Teenagers is one of my favourite songs because as a 7teen year old, I feel that I can identify with it. Other stellar songs by the emo-alternative-rock band include Helena, Famous Last Words and I’m Not Okay. Besides the fact that their music is extremely catchy, the voices of early 2000s bands have my heart. I’m trying really hard not to sounds like some pretentious music analyzer because I’m quite uneducated, but their voices sound raw and more genuine than the voices I hear now on the radio. The lead singer of My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way, is not only a catch because of his staple black eyeliner and pale complexion but also because he is a comic book writer! How cool is that?
If you’re on the verge of tears but don’t want to explain to your parents that school is stressing you out to the point that tears have come to your eyes, put on Hear You Me and everyone will be crying. 23 and The Middle are Jimmy Eat World classics as well. In every great teenager movie, there is a punk-rock-alternative-grunge song that describes the situation perfectly. The Middle is a wildly inspiring song that assures me in almost every situation.
Often people complain about mainstream music but the reason that songs become “mainstream” is because they’re so good and more people are beginning to realize it. Is that really a bad thing?? Well yes, somewhat when you’re trying to keep an artist low key so that you’re the only one that’s really hip and listening to the artist while they’re still “underground”. Anyways, The All American Rejects are perfection. They have every situation in life embodied in the perfect combinations of lyrics, melody and beat. Please listen to this at least once in your life.
