It’s that time of the year when for Grade 12 students, it’s natural to not only welcome the changes the coming year will bring, but also dread them. With graduation just months away, my fellow Grade 12 compatriots have started applying to post secondary schools already, but many of us are still clueless about the processes.
Confused about the application process? Well, let me break it down for you! 🙂
1. Choose your course, and an appropriate school
Do you want to study science and stay close? Or is wanderlust tugging your heart? Regardless of who you are and what interests you, there is a school out there that meets your needs.
SchoolFinder is a great resource if you’re feeling a little lost. If you’re having trouble deciding on your major, this quiz may set you off on the right tangent.
Every school has an Admissions department who you can contact with questions about the school and their programs.
2. Apply
Well, that escalated fast, hey?
If you are in Alberta, you can use ApplyAlberta to apply to schools in Alberta. You have to create an account and a profile, in which you enter your school and course information. It makes applying so much easier! Your Alberta Student ID is given to you, and it is beneficial to memorize it.
If you want to apply to other schools, go to their website and follow the instructions given. The “Prospective Students” section is the best place to start, and will outline what the requirements are. To apply to some schools, you may need to fill out a personal profile, mentioning key aspects of your life that helped you become a better person, and things of that sort. This is seen in the application for University of British Columbia.
3. Pay the Fee
This is a part of the application process, and in order for your application to be submitted, you need to pay an application. It is non-refundable, usually payable by credit card or PayPal. Think of it as an investment into your future!
4. Check your Email
Keep checking your application status on the website of the school and your email. Schools use email to keep in touch with you – to inform you about upcoming deadlines, requirements, news, etc. I recommend checking your application status once or twice a week. It’s also a good idea to check your mailbox for physical letters from the school.
