This year, Western Canada High School hosted the ADSA (Alberta Debate and Speech Association) 2012 provincial debate championship on March 17.

As December approaches each year, debaters from all around the province prepare for regional championships in their respective cities. Out of the many tournaments offered earlier in the year, all debaters are required to participate in at least two to guarantee their invitation to regionals.

On March 17, the debaters who placed in top regional aggregate participated in a rigorous championship among cream-of-the-crop students from all around the province.

Each year, the ADSA is a fierce competitor at the national level. This year, the 2012 national debate championship is hosted by the QSDA (Quebec Speech and Debate Association) in Montreal, Quebec. At the high school level, Team Alberta 2012 is comprised of six individual teams.

This year, one Bilingual Team, two Senior Beginner Teams, and three Senior Open Teams were invited to compete nationally in Montreal. This five day championship runs from April 25 – 30, so be sure to support any participants you may know of. (:

Even though Martin Poirer is resigning as president of the ADSA, he will nonetheless participate in the judging process for Team Canada 2012, which hosts its selection process for 9th and 10th grade debaters in late May.

After an exciting season, debate is almost at its close for this year. (:
