Flights: Can’t live with them, can’t live without them

Yesterday, I was extremely frustrated with my flight experience and therefore I decided to blog about it. This is how my day went…

I woke up at 4:30 a.m. to go on the bus for my 7 a.m. flight. However, when I entered the airport there were these bright red letters with my flight number. Beside my flight number, you can guess what it said… CANCELLED. At that point, I’m thinking what do I do? When I go up to the counter, they told me I had to wait till 2 p.m. to board a plane. Also, there wasn’t another direct flight, so I had to connect via YYZ (Toronto) and then onto YYC (Calgary). Additionally, the layover was three hours in Toronto.

WestJet felt bad that we had to spend 17 hours in an airplane/airport and gave us $150 for the five of us to spend at YOW (Ottawa). Let me tell you, it was quite a journey. We went through every fast food restaurant in that place. We spent $20 at Booster Juice, $40 at Tim Hortons, $50 at Rideau Restaurant, $20 at Starbucks and $20 at OPA. So if you want to just pig out at the airport, pray that your flight is cancelled.

Basically, I just wanted to tell you that WestJet or airlines in general are unpredictable, but unfortunately you need them if you want to get from point A to point B quickly. They won’t cancel a flight unless they have to, and it’s not their fault, but I was definitely not a happy passenger. I can now say that I’ve slept in an airport (for about seven hours). I would always wake up with people looking at me as if I’m crazy… oh well. The moral of the story: flights – can’t live with them, can’t live without them. After these 17 hours of torture, I can honestly say that this was an experience to remember for the rest of my life. Now, I will take ‘sleeping in an airport’ off my bucket list.
