Game of Thrones

Over the past summer, I started reading the Song of Fire and Ice series, by George R.R. Martin after browsing through the library one day. An epic fantasy that currently spans five of a planned seven books, A Song of Fire and Ice paints the picture of a fictional society split into two continents – Westeros and the distant Free Cities. The series begins with A Game of Thrones, which introduces the major players in what eventually becomes “The War of the Five Kings.” As the book progresses, Martin mesmerizes the reader with eloquent imagery and plot twists aplenty. The character development really is masterful, as I have already noted several instances where I end up rooting for a character after strongly disliking him or her when first introduced in the book. Furthermore, the series has been so well received that an HBO show has been modeled after it. The first season, which depicts the events of the first book, finished up in June and the next season will start up in 2012.

You can get the books from Chapters/Indigo, or if you’re patient, you can place a hold at the library for each book. In the meantime, check out the trailer for the first season of the TV adaptation!
