You Should Open Your Windows

It probably sounds quite strange to say this during winter, but this is a PSA to open your windows. 

 

But why should you open your window?

The winter season indicates that you’re likely going to stay inside for extensive periods of time. This implies concentration of indoor pollutants such as dust particles. The United States Environmental Protection Agency states that outside air is typically cleaner than indoor air, and opening your window helps circulate those pollutants out. Additionally, there is no fear of insects entering your room during winter, and if you’re into the external white noise that’s also a bonus. 

Although I focus on winter here since it’s relevant, this applies year round. Hopefully you have a bug screen if you’re doing this in summer though. 

 

But why shouldn’t you open your window?

Now, there are also clear downsides. There’s obviously the case of dryness and discomfort, however, you only need approximately 15-20 minutes to circulate the air and experience the benefits. Arguably, you shouldn’t keep your window open for full extended periods. Depending on the temperature difference between your building and the outside air, your heating / cooling system will have to work harder to sustain the temperature. If your weather is as brutal as mine, you might also find your window fully freezes in place. 

Given the health benefits of a proper air environment, you should probably open your window if you can. This is especially important if you’re a sedentary person. Keep your room from getting too stuffy, and remember to moisturize too.
