BLM Is Not A Trend

Over the past few months and in the summer, social media has been flooded with posts surrounding the brutal murder of George Floyd, but recently I’ve been seeing less and less of this content. To me, it seems like BLM is being treated as a trend. As many people have spoken on the topic once and never again. Don’t get me wrong, it’s better to talk about it once than never. But I feel like it should be an ongoing topic as it STILL affects many today.

What IS BLM?

Black Lives Matter is an organization that advocates for non-violent civil disobedience in protest against incidents of police brutality and all racially motivated violence against African-American people.

How You Can Support BLM:

You can support BLM by signing petitions, donating, and protesting. If you aren’t interested in doing those, the least you can do is spread awareness by sharing links and posts. At the end of this article, I’ll be providing you with links that you can donate to and petitions that you can sign. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing the link as someone else may be able to.

“Black Out Tuesday”

If you’re active on apps like Instagram, you’d know that people posted a black screen on their page, supporting BLM.  There is nothing wrong with doing this, but if you used the tag “#blacklivesmatter” or “#blm” please edit the post and change it to “#blackouttuesday.” Why? These black squares are censoring the public from seeing more important posts like videos, links, protests, petitions and give people an easy way out for accountability. A blank Instagram is not going to do anything.

The fight has not stopped if it is not trending on social media. In order for this change to occur, it is very important that we continue to recognize and understand this issue. I would encourage everyone to sign a petition, donate, phone bank, protest, speak up, and make a difference.

No justice, no peace.
