Mmm... *drool*

During our extended lunchtime at school, Juliet and I once again marched down 17th to find Jelly Modern Doughnuts. And let me tell you, these are not your Timmies doughnuts.

Location

Fortunately for the two of us, JMD is pretty close to Western Canada High school. Located on 8 St and 14 Ave, it’s a nice place to drop by if you’re hanging out on 17th. However, the only real problem with it is that the store isn’t very conspicuous, so it may be a little difficult to find for the first time.

Atmosphere and Service: 8.5/10

The first impression of JMD when we walked in was that it wasn’t a typical fast food restaurant, but rather a place to relax and enjoy some sweets, very much like a cozy little cafe. We loved the soft lighting, wooden decor (JMD is eco-friendly by using bamboo materials and recyclable packaging) and the simplicity of the setting. Although… if you’re on the tall side, you may have to sit on the higher stools, and not on the wooden chairs because they are quite low. The music playing in the background was soothing, though it wasn’t quite audible. The workers were friendly and obliging. They answered our questions as much as they could (though it was unfortunate we couldn’t talk to the chef! We would have asked about how they make some of the doughnuts).

The doughnuts: 9.5/10

S'mores on the bottom

Finally, the doughnuts. JMD offers hand- crafted doughnuts that are made fresh each and every day. They’re made with organic ingredients and what can be made without buying they would, including marshmallows. I tried the S’mores doughnut and Juliet the Irish cream, JMD’s choice of the month. The chocolate layer on the top of mine wasn’t overwhelming- you could tell it was carefully done by hand, and the same goes for the chocolate on the Irish cream. The bread itself didn’t overpower the taste of the chocolate and marshmallow, maintaining the essence of a s’more. The marshmallow didn’t have that weird soggy feeling when biting into it, but rather it was as soft and chewy as a marshmallow would taste after it’s been melted over a fire. On top of the chocolate layer finished all the components of a s’more- graham cracker crumbs. The creamy centre of the Irish cream (hence the name) was light and satisfying. It wasn’t too rich or heavy. That with the layer of chocolate and the softness of the bread was more than enough to make us lose our words. The only problem we would have with the doughnuts is the cost. One doughnut costs $2.25, which may be a lot more costly than Timmies, but considering the work put in to make the doughnuts and the cost of buying all sorts of organic ingredients (not to mention the doughnuts are delectable), we wouldn’t mind coming back again despite the cost.

  1. I believe they also scored 10/10 for being healthy! The word “organic” means so much, especially on something like diabetic donuts that is one of the leading cause of fluffiness. Eating creamy and chocolate smothered jelly donuts for it being “organic” is like having McDonald’s CancerSticks just because it’s made from natural tuber.

but who can’t have a little indulgence in such bad times? “Stressed” spelled backwards is “Yum.”

  2. I tried the Smores today, it was excellent, but the crumbs and chocolate poweder could get messy if you don’t hold a napkin underneath. It’s not bad for someone looking for something more interesting than just your everyday sugar coated donut.
