10 indoor plants to cure your pandemic blues

Adapting to life at home during quarantine can be challenging. Being indoors for the majority of the day can be emotionally and spiritually draining. To remedy some of those imposing feelings add some life to your space. Growing plants indoors is a great way to brighten your space and provide you with some preoccupation. The following houseplants have varying light and water requirements but with enough tender, love and care, they will last you until self-isolation comes to pass.

With some luck, you may be able to find these plants in your local grocery store.  If you’re brave enough to venture out and if you’re not, (I don’t blame you!) you can purchase some of these varieties at Plant via their curb-side pick-up program. For more contactless shopping options you can also order online from various plant stores located in Calgary such as Golden Acre or green-gate.

The 10 following houseplants are key members of my urban jungle and would make great companions during your quarantine.

1. Pothos

This plant is the staple of home gardeners everywhere for a reason. It is hardy and fast growing with beautiful broad leaves on a climbing or trailing vine. The colour of the leaves varies between green to white based on the variety.

2. Ponytail Palm

One of my favourite houseplants, this annual plant will make you smile with its bold personality and curly leaves. Its caudex (base) is adapted to store water for dryer climates so be careful not to overwater it!

3. Watermelon Peperomia

This cute and small peperomia strain has large, circular, watermelon patterned leaves. Place this plant in a bright location with indirect light and let it dry out in between waterings to enjoy its unique variegation.

4. Snake Plants

The BEST plant for any low lighting situations, and super easy to care for!

5. Asparagus Fern

One of my less finicky ferns, the asparagus fern will reward its caregivers with delicate spiky fronds. It prefers bright indirect light and humidity so place this near an east or west facing window for consistent growth.

6. Pilea

Pilea – also known as the Chinese money plant – is a smaller and slightly more expensive plant originating from southern China. It is easily propagated, simply place the ends of a few trimmings in water and wait until roots develop before transplanting it into dirt.

7. Spider Plant

As long as you water it once in a while this common plant will grow relatively fast.

8. Dragon Tree

Dragon Tree, also known as Dracaena Marginata, is a distinctly spiky houseplant. It can tolerate a variety of conditions but will grow fastest in humid environments with bright indirect light.

9. Ivy

This elegant climbing vine plant comes in varying varieties and conditions. It too can be easily propagated.

10. Money Tree

Perhaps one of the most popular house plants, the money tree is a propagable braided tree with lots of growing potential.

Stay safe and happy gardening!
